Hot.

AC is such a wonderful thing. You don't realize how much you depend on it until you don't have it. We don't have it. It's hot. Actually it's only 78 degrees inside (right now) but I'm so used to my cool 74 degrees. I can't sleep when I'm hot, so the past 2 nights have been nothing but tossing and turning. I think I've seen every hour of every day for the past 3 days. And I have to work tonight. At least work has AC. Man I wish I still drank coffee!

My dad and an AC guy came to check out the problem today and apparently the outside unit has been trying to catch on fire for who knows how long. The electrical panel was black with smoke. We were hoping to get a temporary fix until the new unit can be installed, but that seems unlikely now.

We are having our house painted today. Jordan has wanted it painted ever since we signed the papers. Unfortunately, that means I have to keep the glass doors closed. I don't think Joel (the painter) would appreciate the Russells nipping at his heels while he works.

I have to go to work early tonight for yet another mandatory meeting. It's schedule for 5-6. I don't have to start work until 6:45. What will I do for the extra 45 minutes? Probably just enjoy the AC.... But of all the days that I've had little sleep and been interrupted by AC guys, I have to go and work extra. Stupid.

Anyone mind if I come spend the night for the week?

Black and White All Right

A couple of months after we moved in we invited Jordan's parents down from Baton Rouge to spend the week in Orlando. Since we wanted them to stay with us we really needed to have more than a blow up mattress on the floor. I knew I wanted a guest room for our house anyway, what else are 2 people going to do with a three bedroom house? I also knew I wanted the room to be different than anything I had ever done before. I was going for glam/mod, I probably got more glam than mod, but too much glam is not possible.

I started with a blank convase and my old headboard from when I was a kid (Yeah, my parents still had it stored in their attic). It was originally a cream color with gold outlining (I super wish I had a pic!) but I quickly solved this 70s dilemma with a can of white spray paint.

This is what the room looked like before we moved in

Thank God for paint (on the walls and headboard)

For the bedding and accessories I started searching my normal stores, Marshalls/HomeGoods/Target. I got the comforter for $70 at Target and the pillows for $150 at Marshalls. The pillows were more than I would normally spend, but it makes the whole room! I also got the white wreath from Marshalls and some of the white and silver accents.

The bamboo chair and table lamp came from HomeGoods (I love that place). I already had the black side table that was originally from Target. I made the faux sheep skin from a synthetic rug from Bed Bath and Beyond YoungHouseLove style!

We bought the ladder shelves way back when we got married from Linens N' Things. Right now all of our old memorabilia is stored on these shelves. Our wedding invitation. Jordan's late grandmother's mini clocks. A bolivian doll from when Jordan was a kid in South America. A picture of my mom and I from my bridal shower. A mini Eifel tower from our life long friend Jennifer. Jordan's father's german wooden doll from when he was a kid. I could go on and on about what's on those shelves. It's not necesarrily the prettiest stuff, but none of it deserves to packed away in boxes either.

Over all, it's a pretty romantic guest room I made my in-laws.... oops, haha! Not bad for a couple hundred dollars and a months worth of throwing things together.

Blower Done Blowed

Thank you Jesus it has been such a cool spring. Our house, with the high ceilings stays really cool (like low 70s) until the afternoon. Thank you Jesus because our AC is about to bite the dust.

When we first started using it again it started freezing up. We had freon put in it, checked it for leaks and went on using it. Then it started freezing up again. My dad came over and cleaned the coils. And it's still freezing up. So we finally decided we're going to have to bite the bullet and buy a new one.

Ouch. Those suckers are expensive. But, the exact amount we've put into savings this year is the amount the AC unit will cost. How cool is that? We get a family discount because the guy whose doing it gets a lot of his work from my dad, so he said he owes my dad at least this much. So that is saving us somewhere around $1500.

Oh, and when the government takes over in 2010, plan on spending somewhere between 6 or 8K for the new, earth friendly, units. But don't worry, they will be offering government loans to help you out. Isn't that thoughtful of them?

Just Waddle a Little Further!

Is walking really all that bad? Because the people in the Publix parking lot would rather sit in their car, waiting for a close parking space for 5 minutes than parking slightly further away and getting into the store in half that amount of time! Not to mention they are holding up another 5 cars behind them so they get that super close space. Is it really too much to ask for you to get out of the way and walk an extra 20 feet? God forBID their cankle-selves be in the fresh air for more than what is absolutely necessary.

PS I hate my air conditioner.

Welcome To The Jungle

That song was stuck in my head all day. Vernon and Dad came over and helped us take down this tree. It was Jelly's favorite chewing tree, but it was in an odd place and a rather sad looking tree. So Dad dragged his broken self up an 18 ft ladder and chopped it down for us. It's amazing how massive tree limbs are once they are on the ground.

After that Vernon went on a tree trimming frenzy. He even trimmed the neighbor's tree that was hanging over in our yard. Jordan's parents are coming down in a couple weeks to help us landscape the backyard and we want us much sunlight back there as possible. We still have two huge oak trees, so there is lots of shade.

Vernon also tore up the infamous yellow jacket nest tree stumps. Jordan and I tore out all the ferns (I hate ferns) and pathetic little bushes that had given up on growing. Now the backyard is nothing but dirt and a possibly salvageable hibiscus tree. We've got big plans, but right now I'd just be happy with less dirt being tracked into my house by the dogs.

This is Vernon on the 18 foot ladder trimming the neighbors tree.

Whenever we dig in the yard the dogs think we're about to bring something out of the ground for them. This is Peanut being a real Jack Russell.

Two Months From Now

Two months from now we're taking our big two week trip out west. We will be going from Arizona to Nevada to California. We will begin in Las Vegas, travel to the Grand Canyon in Arizona, and back to Vegas. Our trip will end in San Francisco instead of Lake Tahoe because we didn't really see anything in Tahoe we were interested in. We started booking everything this week. Our traveling will look something like this.

Easter Service

This was my favorite part of the Easter service at Lake Eola.

Oh ED

I got another unexpected photo to add to my Weekend Photo Tour. About 9:45 last night mom called to say dad had been hurt while working on the garage door. Apparently the spring on the garage door was still tight, it released and parts went flying. One of the wheels hit him in the face, across the eye. His eye instant swelled shut. So mom immediately called 911. He went to my hospital and ended up with 3 fractures. Two open fractures below his eye and one crushed fracture above his eye. There isn't any damage to his actual eye though. So we were in the ED with him until 2:30. They were their until 4:30. He ended up with three stitches and the doctor kept saying it's going to be a nasty scar. He has to follow up with a surgeon to make sure his bones are healing and he won't need surgery. He's in very little pain and will be on antibiotics for a while since it's an open fracture.

Walk In Our Shoes

I found this on a friend's page, who apparently got it from another friend. It's written perfectly. I have such a hard time describing what it's like to be a nurse. But this is it. This is exactly how I feel and what I go through.

It's so true...

"Patients aren't always satisfied with how well nurses communicate, a recent Medicare survey revealed. Well, nurses had no trouble communicating with me after I defended them (last) Sunday. Nurses from recovery rooms, coronary care, pediatrics, geriatrics, ER and Trauma units e-mailed me across the country. Here's what they had to say:

Come walk in our shoes for a 12-hour shift. Come see the joy, the tragedy, the comedy, the 100 ways we are pulled and pushed, then rate my "pleasant greeting", "answers call light in timely fashion", "states name of patient." Use the bathroom now, because you might not get the chance again until your shift ends. Wear comfortable shoes. Don't worry if they're
clean. They'll end up with blood and vomit on them. We are the patient's advocate, the doctors' eyes and ears, and everyone's scapegoat. We can page your doctor but we can't make that doctor magically appear. We check your stitches, wipe your blood, drain your pus and empty your bedpan.

Nursing is a tough job, but we're tougher. We've been yelled at by administrators, supervisors and doctors. We've been kicked, slapped, punched, spat on, and sexually harassed by patients in various states of delirium, mental illness, arrogance, and intoxication. We've even had chairs and food trays thrown at us. We work mandatory overtime, weekends and holidays. We eat Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners with coworkers. We deal with families who ignore visiting hours, bring food to patients on restricted diets, and insist on staying the night even though it's not a private room. We deal with the Florida son who orders us around to show a parent he's neglected for years that he cares. We cannot be at your side every waking minute. We have 10 other patients. We cannot answer 5 call lights at once. We can't stop doing CPR on a patient because you ran out of tissues.

We are not maids, beauticians, or cocktail waitresses. We are professionals with college degrees. We hate that we can't spend more bedside time with you. Swearing at us will not make us move faster. Taking better care of your health would help. Quit smoking. Lose weight. Start exercising. Stop drinking. How do we survive? We ignore the nasty comments, the demanding relatives, the crazy staffing grids. We count to 10 before speaking. We pray every morning for strength and wisdom, patience and empathy. We drive home tired and frustrated, telling ourselves over and over , "I'm not the nurse I want to be, but I'm the best nurse the hospital staffing allows me to be." We fall asleep praying for the ones who won't survive the night. There is no finish line, ever. Nursing is demanding, fulfilling, and we can't imagine doing anything else. Nothing beats washing blood and glass off a car crash survivor, stabilizing a broken neck, saving a diabetic's leg, keeping a cancer patient in remission. The day we send a patient home we relish the unbelievable resilience of the human body and spirit. We did not become nurses for the hours, the salary, or the glamour of it all. We became nurses to make a difference.

We don't ask for much. One sincere Thank You makes all the
thankless hours worth it."

Jesus Wants The Rose

Matt Chandler never ceases to blow my mind with his powerful messages. This IS what the church is supposed to be. "The church more often than not is an enemy of conversion." What a sad and oh-so-true statement. May this new kind of church take over.

Two Days Hard Work

We smooshed in a lot of work for just 2 days but we got it done. I started by ripping out most of the plants and raking up all the mulch. Mulch is heavy. I worked for 2 hours by myself doing this since Jordan had to work Saturday. He's almost done working his long hours too.

When Jordan came home we went to Lowe's and bought mulch, fertilizer, plants, flowers, weed preventer, pots and the little wall. We had three flat beds full, plus the mulch and wall. It wasn't as much as I expected, yard stuff is fairly inexpensive, compared to my interior decor.

After Lowe's we set everything out in the yard just to get an idea. Then after church today we went back to make some adjustments. Once we got home, we ate lunch with my parents. My dad chopped down the tree/bush in the middle of the yard. After 4 hours of Jordan and I putting our all into it, this is what we ended up with.

To the left of the picture we transplanted the palm, but we don't have any more plants yet, so I'll be finishing that sometime this week.

This is the before picture. This picture doesn't do it justice (or injustice?) of how awful it looked. Most of the plants we half dead. Notice the awkward crepe myrtle in the middle of the yard.

And more pictures of the after.

Our neighbors have been stopping by to say how good it looks. An ex-president of the HOA said he had to deal with a lot concerning this house and he hasn't seen it look this good in years. Jordan and I have always wanted a yard, mainly as a spacer between us and neighbors, but also to do stuff like this. It was hard work, but I enjoyed it.

PS You forget how hot Florida is coming out of one of our coldest winters ever.

God Can Work With 1%

Nausea

Fatigue

Weird hunger patterns and cravings

For weeks now

Oh great

So I peed on a stick and it was NEGATIVE.

Thank God cause my heart skipped a beat when I thought it said positive (Word to the wise, read the directions before trying out the test).

Of course we expected it to be negative. It would be a small miracle if it was positive. But God can work with that little 1% if he really wanted to. Thank God he didn't. Jordan's response to an almost positive test was "We'd be broke" and mine was "All our dreams would disappear down the toilet". So please, stop wishing kids on us. We clearly don't want them, not yet anyway.

And for the symptoms, this is the time of year where I thoroughly screw up my schedule. For anyone who has worked nights before, you know what I'm talking about, it ruins everything about your system. I'm up for most of the night, sleep during the day, and I'm working more since Jordan is never home. And this is pretty much why I haven't been blogging. There is nothing to blog about. And there is no motivation to find something to blog. I need structure and discipline in my life to stay ambitious, and I have none of that right now. We don't even get weekends anymore because Jordan will be working Saturdays now.

Life kinda sucks right now, but at least we aren't pregnant.
